Homecoming Stillwater III

The team worked out another win yesterday against the Baylor Bears. After an early touchdown by the Bears, the OSU defense stepped up and no more points hit the board for the visiting team. The Cowboys scored 34 unanswered points for win #7! What a great start to the year! Three of our toughest games are coming up though as the Cowboys travel to Texas (yikes!), Texas Tech, and finish the season in November against OU. We'll see what the rest of the year has in store, but can't complain about the start.

We enjoyed our time at the game and the ability to stick around for some post-game tailgating as it was an afternoon game. As I predicted, all are tired today, but I am not sure what I was thinking that I would have time to rest with many loads of laundry in progress, a house to clean, and a fall festival to be planned for church. . . . Maybe I can go to bed early?! We'll see.

Homecoming in Stillwater II

We did the parade. We showed up at 8:15 at the designated place to wait and wait and wait until finally our group (#103 out a total of 140 participants) got to start moving around 9:45. As I mentioned, we participated with our church and we had about 40 adults and kids there. I think any Stillwater resident who wasn't in the parade must have been watching the parade because there were a lot of people lining the streets. Robbie and Alexa rode on the "float" (trailer with haybales, balloons, signs, and streamer)while I pushed Rachel and Cole in the stroller. It was a beautiful morning, sunny and cool. The reports from the troops were they had a good time. We saw many of their school friends lining the streets, so they thought that was fun. We are now home for our lunch break and quick naps (for the little tykes) before we head back out to the game festivities which hopefully include another win for our Cowboys! Will report more later and include photos.

Homecoming in Stillwater

Well, I don't know how it is everywhere else, but homecoming around here is pretty wild. Tonight on campus, the fraternities and sororities are paired together to create these large scenes of various themes that include big lights, music, moving parts, and LOTS of pomming (or however you might spell the act of using tissue paper to cover large surfaces). They call it the "walk-around" and I feel like most of the community goes to check out the sets. We went our first year here, and it is pretty impressive, but it is also so crowded it is quite difficult to get a stroller through. Tomorrow morning there is the homecoming parade. Our church is hosting a float, so I think the kids and I are going to walk/ride in the parade instead of watching this year. I am not sure how it is going to work that we park our van in the starting spot and end miles away from our van. I guess we will figure that out in the morning. Then, of course, there is the football game at 2 o'clock against the Baylor Bears with the usual pre-game festivities of bounce houses, tailgating, etc. I am sure there are even more activities going on that I don't know about, but those are the biggies. I am sure we will all be pretty worn out when Sunday rolls around . . . good timing for "a day of rest" . . . too bad Rob has to go to work; however, the rest of us should be able to recouperate after church and Sunday school. We drove 900 miles to watch the Cowboys . . .

play (and beat!) Missouri ON TELEVISION! (ha!) With it being a late game and a late night on Friday, we didn't last through the entire game. All my little people and I (who was covered with little people) couldn't even see the game from the stands. Everyone was standing and blocking the view, so we left just a bit before half time to go back to the family's house where we were staying. The kids of the family we stayed with had not gone to the game, so they were at the house to play and watch with us. Rachel and Cole went to straight to bed. Alexa stayed up for a bit, but didn't watch the whole game. Robbie and I cheered on our Cowboys to the end and were pleased with the results!

Our drive to Missouri went fine. We actually picked up a friend in Tulsa, and she rode with us most of the way. The second adult is most helpful at the rest stops/bathroom breaks. It was also nice to have someone to visit with in the front seat while the backseat crew did their thing. We visited with friends on Saturday, toured the town, and did the game thing that night. On Sunday morning, we went to church and saw many more friends. The kids heard a lot of, "I haven't seen you since you were this big", "Wow, you sure have grown!", and "I can't believe how big you are" from people they don't even really remember. They handled it well though, and it was good for me to see these people whom I have missed. Our return trip home went just fine as well even though I was driving completely solo on this one.

When I was planning this trip, I wondered if I would think I was as crazy as many other people thought I was when they heard what I was planning to do. After the fact, I don't think I was crazy at all and I definitely would do it again . . . and am sure that I will!

Weekend Plans

The kids and I are heading to Columbia, Missouri, for the OSU-Mizzou game. Okay, so maybe we aren't really going for the game (it could potentially not be pretty although we hope for the best and will cheer for our Cowboys to the end), but I am using the excuse of the game to go visits friends. We haven't been to Columbia since the spring of 2006, so I am looking forward to it. The kids are excited as well. I'm not sure what we are getting into with the actual game as it starts at 7 p.m. and we won't have the home team advantage of our club seating that we are used to. I will make sure to report on how things went upon our return.

Kid Speak 2

So Alexa comes home from school a week or so ago and informs me that the kindergarten class did not come to PE that day with her pre-K class (as they normally would do). I inquire a bit to see if they were on a field trip or doing something else special. She said "No, they were busy phonic-ing . . . (long, long pause) . . . doing phonics and Mrs. Jump forgot."

Prayers for Friends

We have friends with a prayer need. Carly Grace, a seven month old cutie, was diagnosed with a (non-cancerous) brain tumor a few weeks ago. She just had surgery yesterday to try to remove it. After 15 hours, they were able to get about 75% of it out. She is doing well post-surgery at the moment, and they are looking to possibly do another surgery in a week or two to try to remove more. Radiation will potentially follow in a couple of years (she needs to be older) to remove any remaining tumor. Please keep this family in your prayers as they continue to work through this trying time.
